SHALOM 2012

SHALOM 2012

History of the Shalom Project

Shalom is the Hebrew word for peace. Breakaway began the Shalom project as a way to get college students involved in spreading peace and the Gospel of Jesus, both locally and around the world. The desire of Breakaway is to see the Gospel of Jesus Christ carried beyond our Tuesday evening Bible Study.

The first project began in 2007 to benefit local charities that were providing beds for people in need: a pregnancy center, homeless shelter, and home for at risk men in the area. When Hurricane Ike happened so close to us, we knew there would be a great need and the project focused on rebuilding homes for families. Last year, we turned our focus to supporting ministry efforts in Haiti. Additionally, we followed up the spring semester with giving to the Seed Company by supporting a translation of the Bible for people in Southeast Indonesia. Last year, we partnered with 2 ministries who focus on freeing children from slavery; As Our Own in India & Restavek Freedom in Haiti. Currently, we are excited to partner with Tiny Hands International.

SHALOM 2012 PROJECT //

TINY HANDS INTERNATIONAL // www.tinyhandsinternational.org

Tiny Hands International is dedicated to empowering the Body of Christ in the developing world to fight against poverty and social injustice by employing effective strategies and biblical principles. We are committed to identifying the greatest injustices in the world and working towards bringing relief to those who live under its oppression. We are particularly called to orphans, street children, women’s empowerment and those threatened by, or victims of the sex-trafficking industry. We want to find those who are already doing the work, who are called and faithful, and help them do it in greater ways and with more efficiency. We do it all in obedience to, and for the glory of Jesus Christ.

GOAL:

We want to help build 2 homes. It costs $42,000 for one home and approximately 15 children to live in freedom. The total cost for both homes is $84,000.

UPDATE: We reached our goal and then some! By the grace of God we raised over $128,000!

 VOLUNTEER //

Breakaway ministers not just to students but through students. A small staff guides roughly twenty student leaders who in turn lead over one hundred and sixty student volunteers. These volunteers are divided into twelve teams, each led by one or two of our college-aged leaders. These student-led teams, among other things, work in the office, pray with hurting students, transform arenas on campus into sanctuaries every week, help students plug-in to churches, and send out the monthly newsletter to our supporters. Students also organize our annual Missions Conference, which brings over 40 missions organizations to the A&M campus each year, our Ministry Fair, which hosts over 20 local churches and ministries, and our Parent's Weekend Breakaway.

We are no longer accepting applications for the fall 2012 semester. Thank you to everyone who has applied!

Thanks and Gig 'Em!
